Our Responsibilities
Responsibility is built into
our daily operations
At McKinstry, we integrate environmental, social, and governance directly into all our services across Northern Ireland.
From waste recycling to safe site operations, responsibility forms part of everyday decision making for us.
Reducing environmental impact by design
We invest in infrastructure, systems, and processes that reduce environmental impact while supporting reliable waste services at scale.
Key initiatives include:
Operating licensed facilities designed for safe, compliant waste handling
Reducing landfill reliance through improved recovery and recycling routes
Investing in modern plant and equipment to improve efficiency and reduce rehandling
Supporting energy-from-waste and biomass fuel production using recovered materials
Turning waste into recovered materials and energy
We continue to invest in technology and facilities that reduce reliance on landfill.
This includes:
A state-of-the-art materials recovery facility (MRF) at Nutts Corner
Dedicated wood recycling and biomass processing facilities
Metal recycling through McKinstry Metal Recycling (MMR)
Clear segregation guidance for customers to reduce contamination
Recovered materials move into recycling, reuse, biomass fuel, or energy recovery routes, supporting Northern Ireland’s shift toward more sustainable resource management.
Turning waste into recovered materials and energy
We have made significant long term investments in recycling infrastructure to improve how waste is processed and recovered. At the centre of this is a £16 million material recovery facility (MRF) at Nutts Corner, designed to sort and recover materials at scale.
Alongside the MRF, our wood recycling, biomass, and metal recycling operations allow recovered materials to enter reuse, energy recovery, or export markets where appropriate.
The facility:
Uses advanced separation technology
Improves recycling performance across multiple waste streams
Supports clearer reporting for commercial clients
Helps divert more material away from landfill
Carbon footprint
We continue to reduce our operational carbon impact through smarter logistics, efficient processing, and targeted fleet improvements.
Carbon related efforts include:
Reducing unnecessary transport
Investment in electric vehicles alongside route planning that reduces fuel use
Improving processing efficiency to reduce rehandling and downtime
Supporting biomass and energy-from-waste as alternatives to fossil fuels
Clear governance, licensed operations
All our operations run through licensed facilities and accredited management systems. With documented procedures and ongoing compliance reviews to support safe, legal, and accountable operations.
Responsibility that supports customers
Our approach reflects how the business operates in practice: responsibly, transparently, and with long term impact in mind. Our customers benefit from clearer outcomes for recycled materials and zero compliance risks.
As we continue to invest in infrastructure and improve recovery performance, responsibility remains part of everyday decision making, not a separate initiative.
